STEPANAKERT, MAY 4,  ARTSAKHPRESS-ARMENPRESS: “10 million drams are scheduled for excavations in Tigranakert this year. With this resources, it will be possible to work for approximately 25 days, at least 7 of which we will provide for general archaeological clearing”, archaeologist Hamlet Petrosyan said.

The archaeologist also stated that excavations are proceeding slowly.

The modest financing of Artsakh authorities are insufficient for opening this powerful city.

“We haven’t opened the entrance of Tigranakert’s castle till now, it is quite possible that a record exists there, we are also unable to carry out wide excavations in the tomb field”, he said, adding the goals are understandable, however resources aren’t in line with them.

Hamlet Petrosyan says there isn’t a more cleaner, reachable and spectacular monument than this.

The archaeologist says authorities don’t undertake special policies for Tigranakert.

“Historic facts are very important when dealing with Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is always emphasizing that these lands are historically Azerbaijani ands, while Armenians are convinced it is the fatherland of Armenians. Meaning the research of Tigranakert is getting some political shades regardless of our will, despite the fact that the research team is trying to keep the excavation in the academic level as much as possible”, he said.

“Tigranakert has a very good location. It is located directly on the Stepanakert-Martakert highway, it is enough to take any route taxi on this road and you will appear in Tigranakert”, he added.

The initial excavations of Tigranakert began back in 2006, upon the initiative of archeologist Hamlet Petrosyan.
