Shushi massacres are never condemned genocide — historian

STEPANAKERT, MARCH 22, ARTSAKHPRESS:Speaking about the massacres of Shushi, head of the Kachar research center, candidate of historical sciences, associate professor Mher Harutyunyan, said what happened was a genocide, which has not yet been condemned by international community.

“On March 23, 1920 Azerbaijani armed forces turned Shushi — Paris of the Caucasus and the pearl of the Transcaucasia — into religious fanaticism. Within a few days about 8,000 peaceful residents were murdered, hundreds of girls and children were kidnapped and subsequently converted to Islam, thousands of innocent people were thrown into dungeons and fire was set to gems of the Armenian cultural heritage and architectural monuments of the fortress,'' the historian said.

In Mher Harutyunyan's words, a long and consistent struggle is required to condemn and present to international community the state terrorism and ethnic cleansing policy conducted by Azerbaijan during that days. Kachar research center has been working in this direction for several years. However, to raise the efficiency of the work being carried out it is necessary to involve all the resourses.

Head of the Kachar research center said that  although the history of Nagorno Karabakh of 1918-1920 has been thoroughly studied, the assessment of especially the Shushi tragedy by historiography is not univocal and sufficient.
