STEPANAKERT, AUGUST 9,  ARTSAKHPRESSThe Tartar right bank canal will be built there, which will regularly irrigate about 10,000 hectares of land.

In an interview with “Artsakhpress”, Arayik Harutyunyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the "Artsakh HPP", said that two large and two small reservoirs and five hydroelectric power plants will be built as a part of the program, with a production of more than 200 million kWh of electricity.

"The canal will reach the right bank of Tartar, irrigating more than 10,000 hectares of privatized land in the Martakert, Askeran and Martuni regions. Our largest land resources, where there is very little precipitation per year and which can provide production of very high yields, are the plots where we plan to develop gardening.

If we manage to plant 10,000 hectares of new orchards in the next 5-7 years, it will allow us to increase gross fruit production to more than 200,000 tonnes, which in turn will motivate the creation of dozens of processing plants. Without this project it would probably have been impossible, "said Harutyunyan.

According to him, as a result of the project more than 150 new jobs will be created in the energy sector.

Touching upon the political side of the project, Harutyunyan said that for years the Artsakh authorities publicly and through the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group have applied to the Azerbaijani authorities with a proposal to use the waters of Sarsang jointly since a whole section of the former canal is currently in the territories occupied by the Azerbaijani troops. The proposal, however, has consistently been rejected. According to Harutyunyan, implementing the project, the problem will be finally resolved and there will be no further discussion with the Baku authorities over the issue.

The investor and the representative of “M.Energo-L” company Alexander Mamunts said that the irrigation of the land will take two and a half years, and the implementation of the complex project will take 4 years.
Specialists are currently studying the possibilities of the canal construction. There are some difficulties related with the relief as the water is to pass through the mountains. Currently, design work is being carried out,” added Mamunts.
