Pashinyan sees great agenda in Armenia in terms of human rights

STEPANAKERT, NOVEMBER 26, ARTSAKHPRESS-ARMENPRESS: During a two-day conference launched in the Parliament on the occasion of this day Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan delivered opening remarks, stating: “Protection of human rights is one of the most important goals which the democratic government, society and country can have in the contemporary world. 15 years ago when the Ombudsman’s Office was founded, there were some negative assessments on it, but I can state that this institution has been developed in Armenia. But we also should note that during these 15 years the relations between the Ombudsman’s Office and the leadership have not been so clear.

The first three Ombudsmen didn’t hold the office until the end of their term and resigned. We hope that after the 2018 Velvet Revolution new conditions and environment for the protection of human rights were created [in Armenia] where a man is really an absolute value, and the protection of his rights is a key task set before the government. The protection of human rights is based on a simple understanding that all people are equal before the law, the people’s inequality leads to corruption. When Armenia is fighting against corruption and monopoly, it first of all impacts the level of human rights”, the PM said.

Pashinyan said today there is a great agenda in Armenia in terms of human rights.

“We can also state that key issues, which for a long time seemed as unsolvable, have been solved. We had parliamentary elections in 2018 which were the first to be broadly assessed by both the local and international observers as free, competitive and democratic”, he added.
The PM expressed hope that the situation of human rights will further improve in Armenia every day, month and year, and this will take place as a result of the cooperation between the government and the Ombudsman’s Office.
