Armenia peacekeeper continues service after being wounded in Iraq

STEPANAKERT, NOVEMBER 16, ARTSAKHPRESS: Major General Artur Simonyan, commander of the Peacekeeping Brigade of the Armenia Armed Forces, told the aforesaid to NEWS.am.

There was only one case throughout the years of Armenia’s participation in international peacekeeping missions when damage was caused to the health of an Armenian military serviceman. In November 2006, Lieutenant Georgi Nalbandyan was seriously wounded in Iraq, and the physicians had to amputate his leg, below the knee.

“The wounded [Armenian] peacekeeper has surmounted the serious injury and continued [his military] service; he already has received the rank of a lieutenant colonel,” noted Major General Simonyan. “Now, he is a subdivision commander in Afghanistan. (…). We are doing everything for the safety of the life and health of our [military] servicemen.”

Armenian peacekeepers continue participating in missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Lebanon. In addition, Armenia has a communications officer in Mali. Their peacekeeping mission in Iraq is completed.
