Changes in Armenia took place peacefully in accordance with the Constitution and laws, with Armenia having complied with all the OSCE commitments, including the protection of the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Ambassador Arman Kirakosyan said at the 1185th meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council held on 10 May, commenting on the latest political developments in Armenia, Panorama.am reports.

Consensus on Karabakh conflict’s peaceful settlement further strengthened, says Ambassador Kirakosyan

STEPANAKERT, MAY 11, ARTSAKHPRESS:The ambassador informed the participating states that in accordance with the Armenian Constitution, the National Assembly convened a special session on 8 May to elect opposition candidate Nikol Pashinyan as Armenia’s new prime minister, adding President Armen Sarkissian signed a decree on the same day to approve the parliament’s decision.

The official highlighted the recent election comes to show that apart from the mentioned fundamental freedoms, the Armenian authorities and citizens have respected and implemented one of the most important rights – the right of the people to form a government.

Mr Kirakosyan expressed confidence that Armenia dealt with the challenge with a clear public agreement on democracy, good governance and human rights protection, which further reinforces the existing consensus on the foreign policy and the peaceful settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict.  

He stressed that today the Armenian people are united more than ever on its path to achieve national aspirations.

The Armenian side also expressed gratitude to all those international partners who have contributed to the opening of a new page of democracy and statehood development in Armenia with their impartial and balanced attitude.

Representatives of the EU, U.S., Russia and Kazakhstan to the OSCE also offered congratulations on the election of Armenia’s new prime minister, reiterating their unconditional support to Armenia and the Armenian people and expressing readiness to boost bilateral cooperation with the country.
