STEPANAKERT, JULY 3, ARTSAKHPRESS: In a letter to Norbert Röttgen, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations at the Bundestag, Ashotyan expressed concern over the recent reports about possible military cooperation between Rheinmetall and Azerbaijan that comes in light of more than two decades of international arms embargo to the country.

Earlier, the Duesseldorf-based firm that makes produces tracked vehicles and large caliber weapons announced it was looking for examining opportunities for cooperation with Azerbaijan in defense sector.
Ashotyan makes reference to the unresolved conflict of the Nagorno Karabakh as a result of “the destructive policy of Azerbaijani political leadership as well as the manifestation of the bellicose rhetoric and unprecedented arms race,”  adding the possible cooperation may violate the balance of forces and endanger the fragile stability of the South Caucasus region.

The Armenian MP also calls on the Bundestag “to fully exercise the mechanisms of the parliamentary control over the processes in the scope of the mentioned cooperation.”
