Russian-Turkish rapprochement possible if Armenia borders on independent Kurdistan: Modest Kolerov

A letter the communist members of the Russian Duma addressed to President Vladimir Putin, proposing denunciation of the Treaty of Moscow signed on March 16, 1921, is a significant step to demonstrate bad relations with Turkey, political analyst Modest Kolerov told Tert.am.

Russian-Turkish rapprochement possible if Armenia borders on independent Kurdistan: Modest Kolerov

STEPANAKERT, FEBRUARY 15, ARTSAKHPRESS: “The reason for this initiative is confrontation with Turkey. The authors clam it will not have any consequences. It is just a demonstration,” he said.

Mr Kolerov does not share the opinions that Russia is trying to settle its bad relations with Turkey by involving Armenia.

“No. It is not an initiative by authorities. It is an idea by communists, and Russia is not involved as a state. It is an initiative by a parliamentary force.”

Russia’s authorities are unlikely to accept the initiative as they are well aware it is a demonstrative step.

“In the present-day world, after the USSR’s disintegration, annexation of the Crimea, recognition of Abkhazia’s independence, the document is nothing but international abstract. The Black Sea borders on both Russia and Turkey, and the boundary waters of the Crimea form part of the border now as well. There is no point in making efforts to denounce the treaty, which is a fact of the past,” Mr Kolerov said.

Asked about a possibility of restoration of friendly relations between Russia and Turkey, he said:

“I think good relations can be restored after present-day Turkey is no more, but independent Kurdistan is formed for the Armenian-Turkish border to be, for example, a border between Armenia and independent Kurdistan.”
