Davit Babayan: UNESCO monitoring may only be simultaneously held in Artsakh and Azerbaijan

STEPANAKERT, JANUARY 17, ARTSAKHPRESS:Davit Babayan, Head of the Central Information Department of the Office of the President of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic/NKR) and Deputy Head of the NKR President’s Office, stated the aforesaid. He noted this commenting—at the request of Armenian News-NEWS.am—on respective accusations by Azerbaijan.

In Babayan’s words, the three mosques—two in Shushi, and one in Aghdam—in Artsakh have been preserved.

“There have been no other ‘monument’ of Azerbaijani heritage in the territory of Artsakh,” Babayan stressed noting that this is due to the absence of a developed Turkic ethnic community. “The existing three mosques have been restored; they are under state protection.”

At the same time, he recalled the Azerbaijani authorities’ treatment of the monuments of Armenian cultural heritage.

“A state which ranks murderers among heroes, the president of that country threatens to down Armenian civil aircrafts, all monuments of Armenian heritage are being destroyed,” noted Davit Babayan.

“We [Artsakh] have nothing to hide, and we are not against the UNESCO mission,” he added. “However, such monitoring missions should be conducted also in the territory of Azerbaijan.

“There is, in Azerbaijan, a huge Armenian cultural heritage, which is being destroyed by the efforts of the country’s authorities.

“But I believe that Azerbaijan will in every way hamper the conducting of monitoring in its territory.”
