Six-power group could hold future meetings on Syrian crisis: Mogherini

Foreign ministers from Iran and the six powers that negotiated July’s nuclear agreement met Monday evening to discuss the implementation of the deal, with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini saying they hope to complete that work in early 2016, TASS informed.

Six-power group could hold future meetings on Syrian crisis: Mogherini

STEPANAKERT, SEPTEMBER 29, ARTSAKHPRESS: Speaking to reporters afterward, Ms. Mogherini said the group also discussed the conflict in Syria with Iran. She said the six-power group could hold future meetings with Iran on the Syrian crisis as part of broader “shuttle diplomacy” to try to end the bloodshed.

“We have discussed tonight the possibility of using this format…also on some of the regional issues,” of which Syria “is the first and most urgent crisis we have in front of us.”

“The important thing is to try to get together all the international, regional actors” on Syria.

However, any discussions with Iran on Syria could complicate efforts to bring Tehran’s regional foes, such as Saudi Arabia, behind a peace effort.

The six-power group, chaired by Ms. Mogherini, is made up of the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Russia and China. The group spent years negotiating a nuclear agreement.

Under July’s deal, Iran must significantly scale back its nuclear activities in coming months.
