STEPANAKERT, NOVEMBER 22, ARTSAKHPRESS-ARMENPRESS: “I did not expect this escalation at all and almost felt it was a very bad April´s Fools joke when fighting broke out on April 1. Of course, the initial shock that made this eruption of violence so hard to believe very soon gave way for a sense of utter tragedy when a little Armenian boy was killed the next day and other children were wounded. But this tells us just how dangerous it is to have unresolved conflicts for more than 20 years. Obviously the situation was and is explosive with internal economic difficulties in Azerbaijan, an authoritarian and divisive Russia and a very similar development in Turkey. The EU peacemaking effort has not been successful in Nagorno Karabakh”, she said.

To the view whether it wasn’t important to reveal who has started the attack, the MEP said it is more important to find a solution to the conflict.

“I do hope that the citizens of both countries take more control of political events and that democracy and human rights is fully implemented in the region. That is the only sustainable way to build peace, by ensuring freedom for all citizens in the region. The alternative to a political solution is a violent solution with military means. That is not an alternative for me. But I believe a political solution has to emanate from the parties and the citizens of both countries, it cannot be pushed through from the outside. I wish I knew the solution of this conflict, but as I’ve said I think the solution needs to be brought to the table by the people involved. The citizens of Armenia and of Azerbaijan and the people of Nagorno Karabakh hold their own faith in their hands”, she stated.

To our question, what must be done to bring the guilty side to bear responsibility on atrocities committed against the NKR civilians, especially the elderly people, as well as the Defense Army soldiers during the April war, the MEP said.

“All crimes against human rights and atrocities of war should be brought to the International Court of Justice and the suspects should be tried.”
